new city, new smells, new colours

yesterday was an extremely lazy day. i'm glad i decided to stay an extra day in siem reap; it's a lovely place and my guesthouse, the ivy 2, was amazing for its price (plus nice people!). holly the australian, jim the english, the german girl, andy the doctor, and paul the young guy (20! how i wish i'd done all this two years ago!).
so i had a two hour long massage in the morning, then spent the afternoon reading in the leafy ivy 2 bar as it was raining for a long time, and in the evening i went to the pub quiz at the funky munky (for a good cause; getting money for a day centre for street kids - and we even came second!) with a few people and then sat in a terrace smoking and chatting away.
i made the usual mistake of going to sleep very late (2.30 or around that time) and then i had to wake up early since a minibus was supposed to pick me up from the guesthouse at 7.45. with my usual luck they forgot to do so1 so i then had to get a tuk tuk to the bus station (which was fine, since the bus company paid for it). what i thought was going to be the super posh bus (9 dollars!) was in reality quite a poor one. very little space for my legs, but i slept nonetheless. and we did get breakfast, water and history lessons (i'm not joking) included in the price.
so now i am in phnom penh, capital of cambodia, in the local khao san road (which is on the lake, the lake being quite suggestive but not very clean). i looked at a couple of guesthouses and then ended up in one of the 'classic' ones (apparently), number 9. it's definitely not as nice as the one in siem reap, but it's also half the price. i'm considering moving to a 'posher one' but we will see. later on paul the young guy is coming as well (took a later bus) so i shall have someone to go out with tonight, which is nice.
tomorrow i'll do museums, royal palace, etc. for now, i'm relaxing (which seems to be the main theme of this holiday, but then that's the way it should be).
everything at home is good (who knows knows, it's something i'd rather not tell the whole world about), and it's such a relief. i was very worried for a couple of days, but i am feeling better now.

I get so miserable when it comes to orphans and homeless children, crippled, too. Poor countries are an inappropriate place for the growing youth.

Version

Because a picture is worth a thousand words, and I cannot describe my life better than a picture can.
And because my heaven is here, I'll wrap the world around it and live in a cocoon. Quoting from a favourite song, 'Letting the cables sleep' by Bush, in its incarnation as a remix. And I do wish the friend who introduced me to the song was here to see the way things turned out.
The photos used on this site were all taken by me and can be found on my Flickr account.
